Commonly known as Butterfly Weed, this milkweed is a native perennial that brings support to pollinators and color to gardens and wildflower meadows. This bushy plant features clusters of brilliant orange flowers atop sturdy stems with rough, lance-shaped green foliage from early to midsummer, serving as a critical larval host for Monarch butterflies while attracting bees and other pollinators. It develops a deep taproot, making it highly drought tolerant once established, and prefers well-draining, average to dry soil – avoid heavy mulch or overly rich conditions that can lead to rot. It is slow to emerge in spring, so mark its location carefully.
